WQSB Virtual Campus

The Virtual Campus provides online courses to English schools and school boards which allows for equity of offerings across the province no matter the size, staffing, or geographical location of the school.

Course Offerings and Portrait

The Western Quebec Virtual Campus provides support with online learning to English secondary schools across Quebec, which allows for equity of offerings across the province, no matter the size, staffing, or geographical location of the school. See partnerships.

All courses are offered fully online.

Access to engaging online resources 24/7 through a secure learning portal allows students to meet in a full-featured web-based virtual classroom.

Students are encouraged to communicate regularly, inside and outside class time, with their teachers, develop skills related to the use of technology, and participate in learning and reflection opportunities using online tools.

Questions to consider before signing up a student for Virtual Campus classes:

  • Did the student’s teachers from the previous year identify the student as able to learn autonomously?
  • Is the student motivated?
  • Is the student capable of recognizing their strengths and weaknesses?
  • Is the student organized?
  • Will the student communicate their needs/questions to the teacher?
  • Does the student require constant supervision due to behaviour?
  • What support and resources are made available in your school to students who take WQSB Virtual Campus classes?

Online Learning Modes:

Real-Time

The Real-Time blended model features live online instruction integrated into the school schedule. Students interact with their teacher and each other using Zoom and collaborative group spaces!

The daily online class schedule is established in collaboration with schools.

  • 6 credit course – 5 weekly classes
  • 4 credit course – 4 weekly classes
  • 2 credit course – 2 weekly classes

Current Courses:

Self-Paced

Self-Paced courses are an option where flexible scheduling is necessary.

Students access their online course(s) through a secure learning portal, follow the curriculum independently, with guided pacing, and the support of a teacher who monitors and regularly communicates with them.

Time for Self-Paced courses must be built into the participating student’s timetable. To qualify, students MUST have sufficient time for online classwork in their school schedule.

IMPORTANT: Self-Paced courses work best with students who have auto-regulatory skills and are highly motivated.

  • Math Sec 4 SN
  • Math Sec 5 SN (565-506)
  • Physics (553-504)
  • Chemistry (551-504)

All requests for online learning support with Western Quebec Virtual Campus MUST come from the school or school board.

Student Expectations

Academic Responsibilities

  • Arrive in class on time, properly equipped with required books and papers.
  • Concentrate – don’t allow disruptions by others and don’t disturb other students.
  • Keep up with homework and assignments.
  • If you encounter difficulties with course content, inform your teacher immediately to arrange for extra help.
  • If you must miss a scheduled class or meeting, inform your teacher at least in advance. Watch recordings/archives of missed lessons.
  • Participate in every class but do not take up all of the “air time”.

Use of the Internet

  • Respect confidentiality – don’t use other people’s codes, files, or passwords without permission.
  • Do not use social media or unrelated sites during class as this breaks your concentration on the lesson.
  • A private chat feature in the e-learning platform permits you to chat privately with your teacher. Use this tool when you feel that there is a need for private teacher support.
  • Downloading and opening multiple tabs and windows may affect audio transmission speed.
  • Don’t give out your password to ensure your privacy of access.
  • Online class spaces are for educational purposes. Students misusing the platforms may be removed from Virtual Campus courses.

Cheating Policy

  • Supervision of tests will be provided by the local school.
  • Students must complete their own work and complete evaluations independently. In cases of cheating:
    • First time, students involved will be given zero on the assignment/test with the opportunity to re-do the assignment for a maximum grade of 60%. The school and family will be informed.
    • If this occurs a second time, students involved will be given zero and additional consequences.
